The current Sovereign Green Global REDD+ conservation project is located primarily in the Milne bay province of Papua New Guinea. It comprises approximately 125,000 hectares of rainforest. The project is intended to prevent logging and other destruction within the old growth forests by offering the farmers financial incentive and intact forests rather than income received from deforestation. Through this project a robust local institutional framework will help public and private land owners manage forests and benefit from carbon funds that will be established.
The project activity will reduce GHG emissions through the protection of forest lands threatened by logging and agricultural conversion. The forests will continue to be protected from deforestation and destruction. No logging will take place take place within the project area during the 25 year life of the project. Sovereign Green Global will employ staff that will monitor the area through ground surveys and communications with surrounding communities to prevent unplanned deforestation and degradation through illegal logging.
